The deck. Seems most houses have one. The one that was attached to our house when we bought the place was in sorry shape. Nonetheless we used it for a good 2 years before replacing it. This deck had been constructed of non-pressure treated, or for that matter any kind of treated wood 30-40 years ago. The neighbors have been in there homes 50 years and remember the deck going on when one of their children was born--the child is in the mid 30's now.

We had one last blast --our wedding--with this deck and then 2 weeks later it camed down. The amount of rot, both dry and otherwise was scary. The general shape was kept the same--basic rectanlge, but I built in some dry storage underneath it and a special place for the BBQ used all outdoor and pressure treated wood and lots of flashing--it sits under a hemlock tree that drops needles like no tomorrow. Anyway we're quite bit more comfortable using this space now. The railing is hog fence and cedar. I figure if the stuff can keep hogs in it will keep people in. Besides it doesn't obstruct the view of our backyard from the kitchen and gives it that kind of rustic feel and its spacing is small enough for the Code ball.
